I have 2000 150 Johnson. I've alwys run johnson evinrude two stroke oil and I've noticed there is a significant difference in price from penzoil sinthetic blend. Johnson oil being twice the price. I have a friend who has a 2002 150 johnson and he uses penzoil and sys I'm crazy for spending the extra money. Other than penzoil being sinthetic is there really a big difference in one two stroke oil to another? Would it do any harm in switching from one to the other from time to time? I bought the boat used and I dont know what kind oil was used before, but I've just always used johnson oil in this and other motors I've owned all being johnson or evinrude. Thanks for any help, Rory

Re: Outboard motor oil

I use Wal-Mart oil myself most of the time. I will occasionally buy Evinrude from my dealer when he has a special. I really don't see a difference. Maybe a little extra smoke, been doing this for years never had a problem. My opinion, its not 1920 anymore and technology has improved i don't believe that the Johnson oils are 2 1/2 times better than the others.

Thanks for the great info. I guess I'll be saving a little money.

Re: Outboard motor oil

There are differences among TC-W3 oils. Synthetic oil makes less smoke, smell, pollution and carbon than any dino oil. Doesn't matter the brand.

Among the dino TC-W3 oils there are big differences in price. It has nothing to do with quality. It has to do with marketing, advertising and general hype. That extra that you pay for "name" brands is all in the hype and nothing in the bottle.

WalMart's SuperTech is as good as any that costs many times as much.

I used to use the XD-50 on a 96 v4 - switched over to Penzoil semi-synthetic a couple of years ago. works for me.
