Hi folks,I have an 18 foot half cabin which I am repowering with a 175 hp motor. While the motor is off I want to take the oppertunity to make a pod for the transom. It will come back 24 inches. Some people tell me to come back with the line of the hull which basically extends the length of the boat by 24 inches.Others have said this will defeat its purpose and make it less fuel efficient, and that it should be up 6-8 inches up off the bottom of the hull. What do you guys reackon.

Any additional weight or increased surface area of hull will require more fuel to push it through the water but really with 175hp, I think this would be very minor.

I THINK I read here that for each 6" of setback that you raise the engine 1". Someone will be along to give you the skinny on that formula. It hasd been discussed here many times before.

You don't want to continue from the bottom, you want there to be a step. This sets the prop away from the transom and gets it into clean non-turbulant water. Just look at any bass or performance hull. I can't remember the elevation to distance ratio, someone else who knows that will chime in.

My boat with a factory in-hull designed bracket has a 6" step.
