Is it necessary to bolt an outboard (50 to 70 HP) to a motor stand if you are not going to run the motor on the stand?

I need to make up a couple stands than I can push around and need to know if it is safe to simply hang the motor from the top of its mounting bracket without drilling and weakening the supporting 2 x 12.

If the outboard has clamps that you can tighten by hand then no, you don't need to drill. If the outboard does not have clamps or the transom bracket does not go all the way over the transom and extend down a few inches, then you need to bolt it. Personally, I recommend bolting it anyway if hand clamps are not present. You don't want to take the chance of having the outboard fall off. Thats a lot of money to spend fixing damage just to avoid drilling a few holes. Those holes are not going to weaken anything if you build the stands sturdy enough to hold the weight of the outboard. Good luck...

If you are pushing it around I would definately put a bolt or two into the stand to be sure it doesn't fall off. Like Jason said, a few holes won't weaken a 2x12 or even a 2x6

2X4 should be enough they hold up a house right?
And they have lots of holes in them. Just build it sturdy with some cross or corner braces. Bolt the motor with at least 1 bolt. You really don't want to drop a motor. Besides the damage you will have to done to the motor you will have somebody to pick it up and expose your inadaqacies.

There's a pic of my motor stand in the url listed in my signature below. I modelled it similar to those shown in the thread Ed mentioned.

I don't bolt my motors to roll-around stands - just get some heavy C-Clamps and clamp it down to the motor board. I've been doing that for years - haven't lost one yet....
- Scott
