Well as the title states my 198? Yamaha 30 3 cycl took a nice little swim in the middle of the lake when i was turning a corner. It wasnt the first time that this has happend to me because I lost my 1980's Johnson Gt 150. Well I got my Yamaha out with a rope, a case of beer, and my good buddy who can dive well. We got the motor out but I lost my motor cowling. The motor runs perfect now that i emptyed all the water of the gas and carbs but i was wondering if its ok to run it with out the cover or if any one might no where i can find one. Aslo what else should I do to keep my motor from falling off... Im now worried about my 1999 Yamaha VMAX 225 going for a swim. If any one can give me Sugestions im all ears.

Slow down? Ur crazy. If i cant go fast the motor belongs in the lake Lol. Thats my 1980s Johnson GT 3.6 V8 that was about 340 Hp (stock = 300). I sold it a while back because it was hard on gas but it did move my hydro stream viper along pretty good. Around 87 mph the boat got really unstable but if you had some balls you could get it up over 100. I sold it took my money and bought a Yamaha VMAX 225 ( rated crank horse power is 260 ) and it seems to move my boat along just as well maybe a little better and lot easyier on fuel.

Re: Outboard Motor Took a swim

Yeh when she's trimmmed out she rocket ship. Im almost sorry that i sold mine... but then i remeber $700 a weekend didnt cut it for me LOL!!. After i had my 300 on my hydrostream i took it off and put my 150 GT that i had lost then found from when my transom broke off on my sidewinder. That was a scarey ride let me tell you when your going along about 65 mph then you look back and you got no motor and you almost go threw the windsheild cause you slow down so quick. But i have since rebuilt my Sidewinder put my 150 on that and bought my 225 VMAX witch im SOOOO happy with its like my 300 johnson power but about 1000x better on fuel LOL. I think the whole point of boating is to scare your self silly. O btw... WTH is ur Avatar... its like a 8ft infaltable with a 50 that thing must just fly LOL

Re: Outboard Motor Took a swim

how do I hold on? ... I use gloves ... lol my hands get blisters from holding on without them .... my motor is always bolted on with a safety cable for in case the transom comes off, I don't wanto loose my motor .... I found one pic of the transom with my old motor on, I'll try to take some new ones this weekend, as I am installing a transom extention on it for my new bigger motor, maybe i'll post pics on the project ..... what I did to reinforce this transom, I cut out the old one (20mm thick) and put a new 50mm aluminium one in and covered it in hypalon (dark grey), then on that I added a stainless steel plate that start at the back as you can see on the pick and wraps around to the front and then bolts on to the floorboard .....

Man my 225 is a rocketship but that thing must just be scarey. d:) Id like to reinforce an inflatable enough to stick my 225 on and put a tiller on my 225 LOL! d:) I think id sink but it would be fun to try Nice transom btw Dont you think you would get more speed out of a stainless or alumenm prop?

lol ... tiller on a 225 .... mmmmm, i'd pass, you will definately not hold on to that one ... lol ... I do have a nice racing SS prop on it now with my 30hp (the one on the pic is my old motor) ..... I nearly killed myself on it this past weekend, almost flipped it again ... was fun though ... lol :)

Re: Outboard Motor Took a swim

LOL!!! Im suprised the thing accutly floats with a 30 on it. Maybe you should invest in a jack plate so you can get even more speed out of it :p Btw you said you had a 70 on a smilar boat... What kind of speeds do you get out of that... or do i wanna ask LOL. you'll prob put my 225 to shame

Re: Outboard Motor Took a swim

I installed a jackplate this last weekend, and it is the same boat the 70hp will go on (once I get it from my engine rebuilders) ...... with the 30hp I get about 50mph and with the 70hp I should (if my calculations are correct) get about 85mph .... I probably will give you a run on your 225 ....lol ..... it floats fine, I designed it so the highjackers at the back support the weight at the back, the whole boat looks like a cat hull at the bottom ...
