I am ready to mount my 175 Johnson ob finally. When I went to the dealer to get new mounting bolts , I asked for stainless and he told me he always put in aluminum bolts . I was unsure so I wanted to get a some input from here . I though you always used stainless steel for mounting ob in salt water ? Thank for the input ! JJB

You are correct, the original bolts were stainless steel. I would find me a dealer who hasn't had his brains melt out. You do NOT use aluminum bolts to hold a 175 on the boat.

Go to any quality hardware store (not a big box store) and ask them to order them. You can still use regular grade 5 or grade 8 bolts until your stainless ones come in and replace the regular bolts.

JJB - A lot of dealers use galvanized steel bolts. These will last a couple of seasons before they rust, but the dealer saves (actually makes) a few dollars, and you get the headaches.

I think you should use stainless. Most descent hardware stores should carry 1/2" stainless bolts and washers and nylon locknuts

You all have a fasten all in your area. After I thought I lost my motor mount bolts I searched one down in the shed and made sure it was something close to the original. Well I went to fasten all and got 4 stainless steel bolts. Later on after I have done mounted the motor I looked in another area and found the old original bolts.

Surely there is a fasten all type of place around.

Just look up fasteners in your yellow pages. Acklands sells them. Buy SS, with nylock nuts abd flat washerss, use plenty of polyurethane sealer to seal them and keep the water out. Where did someone get the idea of using aluminum bolts from???

Have a great day,

Rob.

Yeah! Don't forget the sealer! Be sure to coat the bolts very well, leaving no stainless exposed. Stainless and aluminum set up a galvanic battery --especially in the presence of salt water. The aluminum will corrode, expand radically, and you may never get the bolts out again. The Evinrude casting is pretty massive, but it is still possible for corrosion products to split the casting.

That was the probable reason the dealer told you he uses aluminum bolts.

Tell the truth, I never heard of aluminum bolts, but I suppose it is possible to get aircraft quality, high strength ones sufficient to hold an engine. Won't be cheap though.
