This Sat finally gonna mount my 1995 merc 90 on to my new 87' bayliner trophy.(well...new to me.) On the bayliner, the transom is fiberglass on both sides and i need to bolt the outboard straight to the transom. I know that sometimes there is a piece of wood to protect the tansom against wear from the motor to the boat...

My Question...I have a piece of heavy gauge sheet stainless steel. Would it be a good idea for me to fabricated this piece of of stainless to go between mount and transom? And if yes,,,,should i affix zinc anodes close to the mount to counteract the corrosion....

Or....put a piece of wood between..and if yes what kind.

And last should I just say screw it and bolt merc straight to transom.
Are stainless steel bolts the best to use for this application.

Thanks guys...just really tryin to get this done this weekend...

Me? I would bolt straight up to the transom. Use the bolts supplied with the engine... They are stainless.

Thanks for your imput. Was real sure i wanted to use that stainless plate but read a great post on iboats about galvanic corrosion and wanted to ask about it. Depending on what kind of metal the motor mounts on the outboard are made of could be a bad idea against the stainless. I dont have the original bolts so gonna buy some new ones. again thanks.

WOW, a 90 on an 87 foot bayliner.

Seriously, on an '87 boat, be sure you check out the soundness of the transom before you bolt anything to it. It probably has a wood core, and can get wet and lose strength. It's supposed to be a monolithic (one piece acting) structure. If the core lets go, it gets dangerous.

It helps to use big washers, (I make them out of 3/16" stainless) on the inside of the transom, and be sure to seal up all bolts real well with 3M 4200. Silicone (bath tub caulk) has no place in a boat. Don't last, don't work for long.

hope it helps

Wood is bad as it will rot.
I always, always use heavy sheet aluminum.
