Outboard Overkill?

Sorry for the not-so-clear pic, but I only had my old cell phone with me that day. The boats in the middle of the pic are fast ferries in Bali. Two of the boats had 9 outboards each of 250hp . Seemed kind of overkill to me. Wouldn't it be better to go with an inboard, high power design instead?

Has anybody seen more than this on a boat?

Can you only imagine how to keep all those engines synced together? Got to be the biggest nightmare ever. If you seriously need that much power, seems a better design with one or two huge HP engines would work better...
