OUtboard Question

Hello...

When you get ready to store your boat for winter is it necessary to run the outboard on ear muffs once a month? I store mine in the Garage so that wouldn't be an issue but I'd rather not disturb the neighborhood with my older 2-stroke if I don’t have to.

Thanks

Zipp, There is no reason to do that. Just stabilize the fuel and run her a few minutes, before lay-up and give her a shot of fogging oil and turn her off or stall her. Now let her drain and change gear oil and grease her up.

Not sure I understand what you mean by "fogging oil" I have a portabile 12 gallon tank which is almost empty may have a sip or two in it. I have changed the lowe unit oil allready. I also unhooked the fuel hose and let it run out of gass so that there isnt anything left in the engine

that's all you need to do; be sure to start with fresh gas in the spring

Re: OUtboard Question

Get an engine stand and sit engine vertically, from time to time, could be each 30 days, pull rope several rounds. This will prevent water pump impeller vanes to sit at same resting position during long winter rest stop.

To undertsnad, impeller rotates inside a eleptical liner, not on round one as one would imagine, when at a stop, the front vanes will expand and the opposite will compress, turning flywheel often will help impeller to vary its sitting position lasting much longer. Rubber impellers hardens & deforms much more than impellers made with elastomers which are more flexible holding more punishment while being at compressed long rests. If engine is electric start, run some rounds electrically.

Happy Boating

that's interesting about the impellers. Also a good reason to change the impeller in the spring after storage, not the fall before

I change mine when it needs it. I normally get 3 years out of the impeller before the water pressure indicates a need for change.

You're done, unless you want to fog the cylinders which puts a thin coat of oil on the walls. You can buy fogging oil in a spray can. It will literally say fogging oil. Stabil is one brand, not to be confused with Stabil fuel stabilizer.

Pull the plugs, spray some oil in each cylinder, turn the motor over briefly and replace plugs.....

Nothing to worry about. You can leave it and add fresh in spring.......

Im not so sure about fogging the cylinders... Down here in St Louis the weather can be prety crazy, I'll know that we will have some nice weather comming :) so I will end up going fishing :)

Re: OUtboard Question

Fogging the engine wont hurt anything. If you want to go fishing just start it up and go. It will just smoke a little for a short while. But, if you plan on going fishing here and there throughout the winter then there's no need to fog..... Up here in hard water country we don't have the opportunity to splash until spring.......:blue:

all fogging does is put a thin coat of oil on all the surfaces on the compression side of the motor so there is no dry parts that can rust.

you can fog and refog as much as you want so its only a 5 minute job if you want to make a trip.

there is also nothing you need to do to unfog it except start the motor so its the equivalent of squirting some wd40 on your lug nuts to stop rust.

you don't even need to hook up the water or start the engine to just take time to unplug the spark plugs (to make sure it doesn't start without water) and turn the motor over a few revs once every two months during winter (or anytime the motor sits unused for a long while) so the impeller can flex and reposition itself
