I am going to be pulling my '85 Johnson 50HP (weight unknown) pretty soon. I have no idea how to go about this. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I will be doing this in my backyard no good size trees to winch it from. Also I will be building a stand to put it on any ideas for this would be appreciated also.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the weight of that motor, but I'd think it would be under 200#. Just get a couple of strong guys over to help you lift it (may only need one helper if you're strong). Three of us were able to move around a 100hp merc inline 6.

Here is a photo showing a motor stand we built. The Merc really strained it, but it held a 40hp Force and an older 40hp Johnson no problem

Re: outboard removal

I've got a bad back so the lifting thing was out of the question for me. I've used a good towing strap and a cherry picker to hoist a 100hp Merc (4 cyl). You can get an I bolt that fits into the crank on top of the engine. They're a bit pricy, but you might be able to rent one. If you do that it's real easy. Don't even need the strap, just the cherry picker.
-Joe

Three guys will have that motor off easily, two can do it with a bit more effort. You can whip up a stand or you can lay it on its side on a pallet with old blankets to cushion it. It won't hurt it to lay on its side, just make sure nothing will get pinched or stresses.
