All,

I'm sure my quetions here has been answered at some point but a search has not proven very helpful. Here is my question....flog me if you must, JB......

I've got to replace my 1999 Mercury 25 hp 2 stroke on my 14ft flat bottom and the only "new" engines in that horse power range now are 4-stroke. Not only is weight an issue but I understand that you lose low end torque with a 4-stroke and to prop it for low end torque you sacrafice speed. Does anyone here have any first hand experience with going to a 4-stroke from a 2-stroke in engines of this size and are you satisfied with the performance of the 4-stroke?

Re: Outboard Replacement

Really none of my buisness but why do you have to replace the 1999 merc?
New motors are your only option?
From what I've read on afew duck hunting forums;those 25-30 etecs are really nice motors...sorry,know first hand information(i wish).

Re: Outboard Replacement

Pootnic, My Merc lost a cylinder...ZERO compression. From what I've been told in another the merc engine forum is that by the time i paid to rebuild the powerhead, I should just replace it with a new power head. If I'm going to do that I'd rather sell my Merc for parts and replace it with a new engine with some warranty and such.

I don't know what you did wrong, EH, but you look guilty, so FLOG FLOG. There, that's done.

You will not gain enough weight or lose enough thrust to matter switching to a 4 stroke, but you will gain smoothness, quietness, economy and cleanliness. All good stuff. An ETEC would probably offer the same.

Myself, the grizzled old timer, would seek out a well cared for 80s JohnnyRude 25 and spend the saved bux on great grandbuddies.

Re: Outboard Replacement

JB, I knew I could count on you for some good wisdom. Since I started this thread I've found several used engines in the 20 to 30 horse range and the prices are running from super cheap to WAY too expensive for the shape that the engine looks like its in. I'm going to bide my time and find one that suits me.

As for the flogging, I figured I posted in the wrong forum and that my question had already been answered here somewhere but I couldnt find it. I'm not sure who moved my thread but thanks to who ever did.

Hope all is well with you, JB. THOUGHTS AND VIBES TO YA!!!
