Hi guys,

So I have a 1985 Mercury 50hp 2stroke that is giving me some issues. Pretty much what is happening is when I go start it I have to push in the "Throttle Only" button and push it forward a little and the thing starts right up and runs for as long as i keep the throttle forward. The problem is when i bring the throttle back down to neutral it just dies right there. I just had a guy get a rebuild kit and rebuild the carbs for me and he told me I just need to let it run wide open for a while because the thing hasn't run in probably over a year I'm guessing. Guys any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did your guy adjust the carbs on the motor while in the water?

Running it wide open is a pretty dumb thing for him to tell you.

Everything that I know that has been done to it has been; new starter solenoid, new spark plugs, new fuel line, and carbs rebuilt. I really don’t know if he adjusted the carbs it’s just been run with the earmuffs don’t have a trailer to get it to the water yet. But yeah I say he said wide open but he advised letting it run for a while.

No he said take it out to the lake and run it. Told him I don’t have a way of getting it there so he said just let it run on the muffs and that should help get it to the point when I bring it back to neutral it won’t stall? I’ve done this once since he told me to, pushed the “throttle only” in so the prob won’t spin and got it to start and I let it run not full throttle for about 5min or so.
