Was at the dealer today checking on the boat and she told me the warehouse where they get the Honda outboards is out of stock and they have no idea when they will get more.

I guess the shortages of products from Japan is starting.

Re: Outboard shortage

with everything that has happened in Japan the last few weeks, I would expect to see shortages...

Didn't you expect that in light of the disasters?

Re: Outboard shortage

even a factory that was unscathed by the disaster in Japan (my company has 6 that were lucky) will not have acess to either raw materials, their workforce or any means of getting any stocked finished product out of Japan. Most ocean shipments have been suspended (you saw ships under bridges right?) and air shipments for a bunch of widgets are not as important as food, water, medical supplies...and so on.

I can live without a part I need in exchange for a child getting food.

I knew the product shortages would happen sooner or later but not this fast. I saw on the news the used prices of economical cars went up 15% and may go up more.

Japan invented streamlined, Just in time part manufacturing to avoid excess inventory.
I saw that some Japanese car plants here in the US have slowed down to the point of workers not coming in.

Japan took a real hit. It will be many months, maybe a year or more before Japanese exports are back to normal. And by then, China may be eating their lunch.

People are often surprised at just how short he supply chain is. A week or 10 days of disruption will usually be enough to bring things to a grinding halt. Often less, depending at which point the chain is interrupted. For instance, if our plant got hit by a tsunami, our customers would be done building cars in 2 to 4 days.

In automotive, the longest link is in built cars where the car companies routinely have a minimum of 60 days and up to 90 to 100 days of finished vehicles on hand. They use a little different accounting method than the rest of us.
