I have a 1977 16 ft. AMF Crestliner fiberglass hull,my 115 hp Mercury gave up the ghost. I have the chance to get a like new 50 hp Mercury 1971 vintage for a good price. My question is, will that size engine give me enought power to handle the boat,I dont care about pulling a tube or skier, all I want to do is go fishing and get back to the dock. Thanks

Re: Outboard size

A 50 might be a bit small, Howie.

Assuming the boat is rated for up to the 115, I think you need at least 80hp for satisfactory performance.

not below 70% of rated hp. which as JB said around 80hp. a J/E 88 SPL or 90 vro would make a great outfit. if you go 70 hp, i think you will be suggish. with any load you will have a hard time planing with a 50 hp.

A 50 will get you around, but your not going to come close to setting any speed records. :) It is only a 16ft boat, I think a 50 should be ok if you dont care about speed, and want to just get to your spot. I personally would go as big as you can go, or afford. But to some people speed is not everything. How heavy is the boat? I would say you would probably come close to 30mph depending on weight.
