Just got a wheel and single cable outboard steering control from ebay. Not sure how to connect to the motor. There is what looks like a female ball socket mounted on the cable end. There is no male piece, is this missing or do you have to get a part that matches the make of engine.
Also whats the best way and what to use to lube the cable as its pretty stiff.
I realise the first question is obscure but if there are any ideas or directions to websites with drawings / pics it would help.
Thanks.

Re: outboard steering control

The boat that cable came from must've had a link rod to the motor with a ball and socket on one or both ends. The ball probably comes out leaving a hole at the end of the cable. That's where your link rod would fit if you have one. As for freeing the cable up, good luck! You may have been screwed. Most cables can't be lubricated internally. Try cleaning the motor end by fully extending the cable. Then grease that and the other end and hope for the best. If the seller sold that because it was old and stiff, give him a bad report on ebay. Old stiff cables must never be resold. People's lives are at stake here. With the cable free from the helm and motor, you should easily be able to extend and retract it by hand. There can be absolutely no excuse for selling a stiff cable ... ever ... for any reason or any price. I've seen a lot of people screwed by "deals" on ebay. You can't be too careful.

Re: outboard steering control

Is that a Teleflex unit? Could be, they are very popular. If so, try their website and look at all the manuals until you find the one you bought.

After you get tired of messing around with the deal from ebay, you can buy a new Teleflex unit for about $140.00

Post the e-bay ad so we can see what unit you bought. Can give you better help.
