Hi All
I need help identifying this outboard. The story : Old gent over the road passed away last year so the folks had a clearout and put this by the side of the road. Thats all I know of the history.
I'm pretty sure its the original colour but there are no markings on the cowling or anywhere I can find. There are no rivet holes for plates on the transom mount and no number stampings on the block or leg. The carb is a carter and the ignition is a dual contact unit by wico. After some oiling and cleaning I have 90+lbs compression on both cylinders a spark on both, fitted with champion H10 plugs. The throttle/advance is controlled by the silver knob under the recoil unit. The gear shift is the vertical shift lever. It all seems to be in good order but I 'm gonna need a new impellor. The fuel tank is gravity fed to the card via a small copper pipe , no filter, and the choke and stopcock and the two rods protruding from the front. The copper pipe makes me think merc but the shape is more evinrude. Other than that you know as much as I do.
Andy
I think you have a Martin.Difficult to tell Martins are black.I think it should have a flap type gas cap.look for a model number.40-xxxxx
or 60-xxxxx Or similar numbers.two numbers followed by a - and serial number.Im guessing it could be on the
mounting bracket or maybe lower part of the power head

Post those pix by email to Russ Larson at www.martinoutboards.com. It's a Martin all right...can tell by the shape of the tank. He will have the answers for you.

Thanks gents. I'm now certain its a Martin. It has the poppet valves. I think the tiller arm is not the original and thats where it was. Although its a perfect fit I think it came from a differnet model as it has a twist control that is not linked to anything. I dicovered under several layers of crud the initials NPC which should stand for National Pressure Cooker.

Noticed the red lead on the engine rockhopper....is that the spark plug lead? Do you know what kind of wire that is? Reason I ask, if it's something other than steel core wire, I would replace it with steel core. Other high performance wires using carbon core and such have to much resistance for an outboard. Hampers the spark.

Re: Outboard , thats all I know.

Your motor is more than likely a Martin 75. It is an updated version of the Martin 60 and has the twist grip throttle and a neutral clutch operated off a button in the end of the tiller handle. Puts out about 7.5 horsepower. If memory serves, you had to independently operate the throttle and timing advance. I've never run one, so I'm not certain on that point.

The Martin 60 didn't have the twist-grip, operating only off the magneto advance. I have run a Martin 60 and I can tell you that it's one of the nicest idling motors you'll EVER see. You can almost count the revs at the prop. Our Martin 20 (2hp) will actually idle slow enough where the mild current here on the St. Lawrence will push the boat backwards with the motor pushing forwards at low idle.

Russ has the coils and waterpump parts that are often needed to rejuvinate those motors.

- Scott

OBJ , the red lead is a coil lead but its intergrated into the coil assy. It ohms out at roughly the same as the other side which has a black lead. It does have a twist clutch handle but its never been coneected. I suspect it was added later. Thats where the serial number plate would have been
I've emailed Russ and he has all the parts and gaskets I need. I've started a thread in the Other ouboard forum with some more specific questions if you could have a look.
