this is my first boat guys so bear with me. my throttle box has 2 levers. the one that shifts gears and accelerates and a thin black one on the side that seems to raise the rpm. the problem is the shifter shifts and increses the rpm in reverse but in forward it only engages the prop. to increase the rpm i have to use the other lever. yes i am confused. please help.

Re: outboard throttle

Better give some more info. year, make, model, etc. 29 palms where do you use a boat around there? You have lots of lakes but they are all dry. :p

Re: outboard throttle

the boat is a 1968 stevens ski boat 16ft. the engine is mercury 65hp it runs fine (after we did a little work, but i have no idea of the year. we go to parker, mead, lk perris, lk arrowhead, and th salton sea. all about 1.5 hours. ;) when i pull the shifter back it engages the prop and increases and decreases the speed. when i push it forward it engages the prop but does not increase the speed, i have to use the other lever. even at full throttle with the other lever it still doesnt push as many rpm as just pulling the main lever all the way back.

Re: outboard throttle

I think the small lever you are talking about is a fast idle lever for warming the motor up. The other lever should shift and advance the throttle in either direction. Sometimes they wont go quite as fast in reverse. Something must be wrong in your remote unit,(where your levers are). Have you had it apart so you can look at the linkage? I'm not real familiar with them but I guarantee someone on this board can help you. good luck :)

Hi Merlin<br /> You need to return the warm-up lever to the down position. Then with the control lever push into forward, then push farther for throtle. You should have almost 90 degrees travel from neutral to full throtle. If you leave the warm-up lifted it won't work.
