We don't have titles for motors here in FL, but we don't have titles for trailers either. So, I went to the tag office to get a tag for my newly purchased used trailer, bill of sale and serial number in hand. They wouldn't issue me a tag because they said the name on the bill of sale doesn't match the registered owner of that serial number.

What I'm getting at is in your case, if that motor is previously titled in Ohio, they will probably catch it when the run the serial number. The name on your bill of sale better match. You could find yourself in possesion of stolen property.

Anyhoo, the best way to find out the answer to your question is simply ask at wherever the titles are issued in your state.

I have lived in numerous states and have never had to title the engine. Trailer and boat yes, but not the outboard.

You need a title for the boat not the motor.

some states, like Texas title outboards, you will have to check with your state.

Unfortunately Ohio is one of them states with the overly busybody government. We need title for outboards over 10Hp.
I will follow F__R 's advice, thank you.

The main requirement for the TX governor is that he/she MUST have good hair!

Re: Outboard title

dunno why anyone is blaming the current TX gov.
TX has been titling outboards since I moved there in 1980.
in fact if you move there from a state that had no car or boat or outboard title requirements its tough to get one, AL at the time did not and all my boats, cars and outboards had no titles and it took over a year to get TX to title them.

Re: Outboard title

Don't know about that far back rodbolt...when we got our first family boat in Tejas in '99, they titled boat and outboard together as a package and at a very reasonable rate...$20 for two year sticker and about $10 worth of paperwork to get it done. Starting in 06 or 07, they started separate titles for outboards and separate paperwork and separate fees. It costs me close to $100 to title a new/old/restored outboard every time I find one that I want to add to the permanent collection and run on the boat now and then. And given the good hair requirement, I guess Tejas guv's like expensive barbers/salons...maybe that's why a Houston hair magnate is running for guv on the Dem ticket...Mr. Farouk Shami. Then there's K. Friedman, Good-Hair Rick and Should-I-Run Kay Bailey. Not much choice there, IMHO.

Re: Outboard title

What TD said. There are states that title outboards and if that is a requirement in Ohio, buying a motor without one, is a gamble.

Additionally, some states also allow you to note the make and serial number of your outboard(s) on the boat registration. In such states, a motor sold with a boat, when that motor is still shown as being "attached" to another boat, can cause problems.

When in doubt, contact the agency in your state that registers/titles boats, trailers and motors. If the seller doesn't have the required paperwork for each item, I recommend that you either consult an experienced title clerk, to see if the problem can be overcome, or pass on the deal.

BTW, in some states, you can register a boat as "home-made." The degree of difficulty in doing that, hoewer, varies quite a bit. For example, here in Louisiana, you can no longer do that, unless you can produce receipts for all of the materials that you used to build the boat. While this issue doesn't impact your situation with the motor, keep it in mind for future boat purchases. Once again, it is best to check with the appropriate agency, before buying something that may become little more than a "decoration" in your yard.

Re: Outboard title

Thanks for all the useful info.
I thought for $150 I take my chances and buy it without the title and just use it as long as I can. I ended up not buying the motor however, because it was older (than advertized on Craig's list) model and rough shape.
Stevenj, I will keep the link for later use if needed, Thanks.

Your experience may vary, but you may run slap up against a federal law that prohibits release of personal information (name, address) contained in motor vehicle records. In our state, motor vehicles and boats are under the same jurisdiction.

I have already run up against that solid brick wall. They will NOT disclose the registered owner's name or address. No title, no use the boat.
