I have an old Fiberform with a Mercury 1500 outboard on it. The outboard is completley ruined and dead. How hard would it be to convert to an I/O. What exactly is involved? Is it even possible?

Anything is possible, but as stated above it will be VERY time consuming and VERY expensive. Not to mention, there is a very good chance the boat will perform completely different with the I/O(in a bad way). If you really want an I/O it would be cheaper and quicker to buy one already setup, but if this something you really want to do and know what its gonna take, then go for it!

I've had 3 small outboard boat (15'-16') titles in Ohio, each had typed on it "Not For Inboard Motor".

Interesting mine said no inboard motor, meaning there wasn't one installed. Ohio requires a seperate title for an outboard motor, but not for an inboard motor. If the boat is inboard equipped the sn of the motor appears on the title.

I do however agree that this conversion will be too difficult and expensive to make it worthwhile.

Get a used outboard, check Craigslist and local dealers for one and mount it on your boat.

Re: Outboard to I/O

anything is possible....its your boat....do with it what you want.

keep in mind....that will be a project. do not expect to be on the water next year. and it will not be cost effective......i will guarantee you, (unless you have a motor drive transom package) that by the time you are done you could have bought a brand new 300 hp outboard.

the best thing to do is see if the model of your boat came in an inboard.

also remember that you will loose 4 feet of deck space, so if you are in a fifteen footer....i would not suggest it unless you extend the hull.

if you choose to do this....we will back you.

but for a taste of what you are in for....click the link in my sig. :D

cheers

I always interpreted that on the titles to mean you couldn't add an inboard. I have been wrong before.
