I have a 1960? 17ft Lone Star aluminum fishing/ski boat. It used to have a 80 horse power evinrude on it untill it shelled out last summer. I have another, much larger boat that I was thinking about selling, a 1977, 22ft, Chris Craft with a Chevy 305 4bbl. But then I had a crazy idea, I thought maybe I could modify the Lone star to an inboard and put the chris craft's chevy 305 in it. Ive talked in several forums so far, and everyone says its possible, but they say they wouldn't do it because of various reasons. I was hoping someone out their could help me out, because Im totaly clueless about this sort of thing. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would say do it im currently putting a 4cyl volvo inboard on a 15 ft ski boat it was an outboard boat. If you can take two alright boats and make one great boat do it:D Good luck

what do you want to know?

Compare the 2 boats side by side. If the transom and hull of the 17 foot are similar and strongly constructed it can physically be done.

Whether or not it could ever be used, depends on inspection protocol in your state. If your 1960 hull isn't rated for 230HP you might have a problem insuring or registering it.

However, I'm sure there are literally hundreds of 17 foot hulls in f/g and aluminum around the USA that already have the Mercruiser cutout, controls etc and could be had for less than $200... many for free I'm sure.

Re: Outboard to Inboard

I think it is possible, but I think it is an idea doomed to produce a bad boat.

There are too many differences in design and engineering of an inboard boat and an outboard boat. It would make about as much sense to me to convert a '64 Mustang to front wheel drive.
