When bolting an out board to transom is it nessesary to put in some kind of rubber or what not between fiberglass and motor for protection or can it be bolted straight to transom. thanks

Re: outboard to transom

Usualy the outside from the transom is a plywood board where the motor is clamped on . No need to put anything between the wood and the motor. The wood is there to give the motor a better grip, spread the force on the transom and if it wears over the years it is easy to replace.

We'll assume we're talking about mid size to higher hp motors.

On my boat I like to have some aluminum to protect the fiberglass. Something like a Bobs Machine hydraulic jackplate.

Seriously, a lot of people (including myself) like to have a thin piece of aluminum to protect the glass. We like to make a "diaper" that goes over the transon and protects the inside (top bolt holes) and down the outside (all 4 holes. Then use a plate inside on the bottom 2 bolts.

Just like Dhadley I also installed a thin plate of aluminum on the outside of the transom then I set the motor on the transom I also put thicker plates on the inside of the transom on both top and bottom for my Evinrude.

I always use a piece of thick sheet aluminum. I bend it in a brake so as to wrap around the top.
