It is finally time to get a new boat. My old boat had a merc 4.3 io in it. I am trying to decide if I get a 23 foot maxium with a 5.7 v 8 io or a 19 ft hjrricane with a 150 mercury saltwater ob. Looking for fuel eco as well as performance. Any ideas

I don't see how you can compare the two boats; the power plant is not the biggest difference.

But if I were choosing between two comparable hulls, I would always get an outboard, unless I was over 25', then I might consider direct drive (inboard). But does that opinion matter? No, not unless you also say where and how you are using the boat. If you were in coastal waters, then my opinion counts.

So pick your boat size and type first. Then go find one with an outboard.

I would go with the one that gets the cleanest bill of health , once inspected. As the better of the 2 might end up being the worst 1......if you know what I mean.

Re: outboard vs i/o

Someone on iBoats used to have this saying in their signature line, and I pass it along whenever I can..."Date an I/O, but marry an outboard"

I have had all modes (except jet boat) and I prefer OB over all other. Name a reason...power to weight ratio, ease of maintenance, ease of accessibility, added interior room...there are more. But, that is just MHO.
