I see 25hp engines that are about the same size as my 6hp. What are the differences in weight? Would a 25 fit on my boat just as good as the 6? I have a 12 foot aluminum v hull.
A 25 weighs more that 100 lbs,a 6 weighs about 50 lbs.Obviously the 25 is 4 times more powerful.In a word no the 25 won't work safely on your boat.
Most modern day 12 footers have a rating of about 10 hp.
The boat is a rebuild and the only thing riveted back on is this:
SCZ(2?)303LPO577
Is there a chart that suggests the maximum hp for each type of boat body?
Does the reason a 25 wouldn't be good for the boat have anything to do with ripping the transom off or just too fast once on plane?
thanks
I would think it has to do with both transom strength and unsafe cruising speed. Once when I was young and dumb a buddy and I put a 15 horse on a 12 foot john boat. Needless to say that thing was wicked it would keep up with a 400cc jet ski we had at the time. Turning it while underway was a experience I'd rather not ever have again. I can't imagine what a 25 on a 12' alum would be like WOW. I agree with all, that is way too much. Hate to see how fast that 25 went to the bottom when the hull disintegrated. Are you a good swimmer?
I understand that and thanks. But what about my question about a chart? And by the way being a good swimmer makes no difference when you are talking about the physics and G forces on the human body when in an accident. As to your remark though, yes I am an exellent swimmer.
I'm not 100% sure about this, but I believe there is a calculation over on the FiberGlassics website (fiberglassics.com) that will help you determine the approximate max hp rating for your boat based on its dimensions and hull shape.
Most 12' aluminium boats are max rated up to 10 hp. My deep and wide 12.3' aluminium is rated at a hefty 12.5 hp while my narrow 12' is only 6 hp. I've definately never seen one rated over 15 hp.
I didn't mean to offend, I was just kidding around and do apologize if taken the wrong way. I am all about boat safety and would never want any harm to come to any fellow boater. I do think that combo would be very unsafe but thats not really what you were asking. hope you found all the info you need at FiberGlassics it's a cool site.
