A dude on craigslist has a 78 115hp (just like mine) that threw a rod, and hes selling for parts.

Rather than just randomly buying new parts to solve my engines problem, Im thinking about buying his for $100 and swaping the igniton system.

Would that be a BAD idea?
Could a bad ignition system cause an outboard to throw a rod?

The only thing I can think of is lack of lubrication, causing siezure, or a rod bolt backed out from improper torgue. A badly bent prop can also give a engine quite a shaking, making things' come loose.

I would say to much RPM is the main cause for pitching a rod.

Don't know how the ignition could cause it to throw a rod.

I would get it , you can't buy a lot of parts for $100 bucks, shoot just the lower is worth several times that by itself.

Lots of things could contribute to the engine failure but ignition is unlikely unless the timing was off and it was detonating. The timing is an adjustment so I wouldent worry about it. In my area a motor like that (with a blown powerhead) would sell in about 2 minutes if advertized on the net for a hundred bucks. There arent too many parts that cost under $100 so the investment could pay off in spades and having a complete spare parts motor can also make diagnosing problems with your good motor cheap and easy.
I say buy it fast!

revving the motor on muffs can cause run away, and throw a rod. check the condition of the wires, if brittle and flaking, may be a waste.

I bought it.

I talked him down to $20 if he were to help me put it in the trunk of my car.

Its a 77 where mine is a 78

So most of it is completely different, But I figured for $20 I could take it apart and gain knowledge.

And It'll be a good experiment to see if I can buy broken stuff and part it out on ebay and make a little extra money.

Pics to come.....

Its interesting to see what caused it to break
