I've seen 'kits' with what appears to be thin aluminum faced insulation that you fit into your outboard cover to lower noise.

I'd love to do it, but don't wanna be the first sucker.. I mean experimenter ;-).

I don't know about the kits, but you can get that insulation from a larger home center, like Home Depot.

Re: Outboarder Noise Reduction Kit

not sure how well it works.. but there is acoustic insulation and thermal insulation and they are not (necessarily) the same. The kit is likely acoustic insulation (quality unknown) and Home Depot likely only has thermal insulation. There are Acoustic insulations that work well and are used in factories and such for noise reduction, just not sure of the kit you speak of. Any insulation will reduce noise, some will be better than others.

Re: Outboarder Noise Reduction Kit

Supposedly at least one of the kits I looked at (and I think the other was just 'rebadged') claims to have fire resistant acoustic foam sandwiched between aluminum 'skin'.

I've got some of the aluminized stuff from home depot, I used it in my truck cap and it did seem to quiet things down.. but I'm not sure how well (compared to acoustic foam).

Be sure that whatever you use will not retain heat.

Good luck!

I was kinda wondering about the heat retention thing, with a water cooled outboard I wouldn't think it is that bad..but on the other hand any heat retention is probably not soo good.

Re: Outboarder Noise Reduction Kit

Dont forget about the heat generated by the flywheel / stator combo which can be significant and is not water cooled.

Well, perhaps that'd explain why everybody doesn't have this stuff installed.. perhaps it's a bit riskier than it would seem. Even with water cooling, I'd imagine the temp gets pretty hot in there.

Which got me to thinkin'.. wonder how spray in truck bedliner would work out? That should deaden the sound a bit, not sure of heat resistance though.

I would bet that would hold a lot of heat. How heavy is that stuff anyway? I never tried to pick any up. It's always hooked to a truck when I've seen it.

The spray in stuff isn't all that heavy if you only use one or two coats. It's almost like neoprene when dry. I'd guess two coats on the inside would add about 3oz or so.

Re: Outboarder Noise Reduction Kit

My cowling on my 89 200 Merc has a foam liner that is stuck to it, probably with spray on glue. It is a soft foam about 1/2 inch thick, don'y know how much it actually helps as the 200's are loud anyway.

If you do put some sort of liner in there, be sure it's gonna stay put, not come loose and get sucked into a carb.

c/6

Hooty

For what it's worth.

I put carpet padding in my cowl, cut to fit and attached with 3M spray adhiesive on both sides.
It made a big differance in the noise and is still in place 3 years later.

Hope this helps. :)

Sure does help, I've got some aluminized insulation (1/4" or so think) lying around.. I'm thinking I might try that.

Good to hear I'm not the only person doing this ;-)

braiondead - Carpet sounds like a good idea. Couple of things to think about - - First you don't want to get any kind of sound deading material anywhere close to the flywheel. Next think of the airflow required for the carb intake. Finally I would test whatever material you decide on for flammability. If you ever get any kind of fuel leak, the fuel may wind up in the material like a sponge. All it would take then is a small spark and ---------

Re: Outboarder Noise Reduction Kit

The '60s J/E BigTwin cowlings were built with about 1" of open cell foam for soundproofing, sort of like what you'd find in a seat cushion. The cowling I eventually got was so soaked with gas and oil from 40 years of service that it would have gone off like a bomb if you had thrown a match at it. When I pulled the foam, I actually wringed it out for recycling!
The long and short of it is - closed cell foam is going back in. Anything that's going to soak it up just seems like an oily rag waiting to happen...
