I've been checking over my 89, 90hp Johnson outboard. I've only had it about a month.
It would run on muffs but would die while in idle in the water.
I figure it had to be sucking air from somewhere so I replaced the fuel line, bulb and filter. I also noticed some seepage on the carbs. So I started tighteneing down the screws top and bottom of the carbs. All seeping of fuel stopped and it ran great this mornning and didn't die in idle.

With a little age bolts and screw will loosen up over time. Glad I didn't have to rebuild the carbs.:)

But rebuilding the carbs would be wise, plus replacing the water pump and gear oil. New to you , theres a lot of preventative work that ought to be done, all it takes is a spec in the carb to fry a piston.
Rebuilding carbs is very simple, its harder to remove them from the engine than the actual rebuild.

I thought you were gonna say somthing like "they don't leak oil, they just mark their spot!"

I plan to rebuild the carbs, jonesg
Already ordered the kits.

itaboatstime,

It did mark it's spot in the garage that what got me to looking. I was thinking Harleys because there is still a spot in the garage where my Harley used to sit before selling it in 03 to buy a boat.:)

That's a big HELL NO!! Outboards are not like Harleys. Their much easier to work on and are far more dependable. One of the few machine made in America that was done right.;)
