outbourd n00b! Please assist.

Howdo folks. I've got my hands on a fairly new Evinrude 5hp outboard. All in all it's in fairly good nick. Only thing is, it gave the original owner a little trouble about 4-5 years ago and has been sitting dry in a shed since.I was wondering whether any one could give me any info on it i.e. it's age, it's name, schematics, e.t.c.

The engine stamp : B8915712

Head gasket is rotten and the thermostat is fried. There is a little of what i imagine is salt on the face of the top piston and the cylinder head. The bottom is fine. The cylinder walls are clean, nicely oiled with no visible scores.

Basically I have no experience with outboards. I could dismantle and rebuild a lawnmower in half a day but I realize that there not the same thing.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

B = Made in Belgium
E= Evinrude
5 = 5hp
D = Deluxe .... full cover, remote tank and FNR gears (I think)
R = Rope start
L= Long shaft
EN = 1992
M = a production suffix

The parts diagrams at Shop.Evinrude.com do not come up with a 5hp model. I suspect the 6 hp diagrams will be the closest. The 5 hp may have been something produced for the European market and that it is a derated 6hp engine.

Closest thing to a lawnmower that you will find other than another lawnmower

Its name ?? I think you will have to name it yourself. How about Vicky.
