Had my lower and upper separated now for about a week. Had oily rags over the u-joints in garage. Today I put it back together (parts finally came) but it's not on the boat yet. When I turn the shaft holding the U-joints.. It sounds like dry rubber on metal.. it didn't make that sound when I fist took it off.. The outdrive is filled with gear oil.

Is this a problem, or is it just dry from being off the boat?

Thanks, Paul (again). Oops.. posted in the wrong area.. This is an OMC cobra.. sorry..

Impeller as in the water pump impeller? I didn't take the upper apart, just the lower to replace the shift rod and bearing housing. Is it normal to hear this just turning by hand, or should I open the upper and take a look inside there too? Thank you for the reply.

Bondo is right. the water pump impeller is what you hear. The reason you may not have heard it earlier, probably had some water in it.

You can image the horror I was going through wondering.. if I left a rag in there, or a bolt lose or "chit" what now. (BIG SIGH OF RELIEF).

I covered everything with that aviation sealer, sticky stuff.. but I was starting to like the way it smelled. This thing went back together a lot easier then taking it apart. Since I have the boat up on blocks (replacing the rollers and bunks) I'm going to wait to put the outdrive back on. Now, waiting for my roller pins, and carpet to get here. I ordered the greasable shafts from this site.. Best price out there.. I hope they are as awesome as they sound.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU for your replies!!! :) :) :) :) :)

Just to make sure (before I put the outdrive back on the boat), can I put the muff on this thing and run some water and see if the sound goes away? Or take the upper housing off and put some in the tube that goes to the impeller?

If you are really concerned, you can take the impeller housing off and put a small amount of vaseline on the impeller veins and re-assemble and make sure your noise goes away

Ahh... Thank you.. I will try that in the morning!! I just take that long cover off on the top drive to get that that right? No gaskets to break open, or reseal? (looking at the manual now, it looks easy).

It's a rubber o-ring gasket - if in good shape, it can be reused
