Trying to help my cousin... he changed the impeller on his 82 mercruser 228hp(305) and got the shift linkage out of place, When I tried to help we pulled the lower unit and the shift rod spins freely. (I am assuming that he broke the shift crank). unless I am missing somthing the prop shaft must come out for this repair. I am a mecanic by trade but Not experianced on boats. is this repair somthing i should attempt? the housing and retainer nut are badly coroded and I am afraid that even with a new nut the threads will not hold. If we should need to swap lower units, what will work? I read all alpha1 gen1 and back are compatable, but how many ratios are there and how critical is it to mach the ratios?

you are correct, any alpha 1 gen 1 lower unit will work...the gear ratios are only in the upper units.
