Outdrive clicking and popping

I have a 1992 Bayliner Classic 22' with a 4.3L V6 Alpha One Mercruiser. Last weekend I took my boat out and ran it hard. When I put it up for the night it was fine. The next day I took it out and there was a popping or clicking noise coming from the outdrive. The clicking is consistent with the RPMs. If I rev it up, the clicking speeds up. If I slow it down, it slows down. I checked my upper and lower unit gear oil levels and everything seems to be fine there. I put my boat in the lift and went under the outdrive and found a punture in a bracket right where the lower/lowest hose comes out of the boat and connects to the out drive. Could this be it? Someone please point me in the right direction! Thanks - Joe

Re: Outdrive clicking and popping

does the noise correspond to engine rpm all the time or only when in gear?

Could it be a universal joint? Not sure which "hose" you're referring to that is punctured but if it's bellows could be water getting in there. U-joints, gimbal bearing, etc... don't do well when wet. When is the last time you had the outdrive serviced and the alignment checked, etc? Just some thoughts.

Re: Outdrive clicking and popping

I just came back from the boat shop. My whole outdrive is bad. I had teeth come off the upper unit that somehow ended up in the lower unit. Both are burned up. $2700 for an aftermarket outdrive with 3 year no fault warranty. Happy boating for me.

comes with a warrentee too......

read a diddy in a boatin magazine the other day. basicly said that if ya got a high dollar rig, ya may want to have yerself a mercruiser replacement. but for the average boater, a sei drive sure looks mighty attractive on a average boat. gave them relitivly high marks on useing quality steels in gears and stuff too. not that i'm sayin yer bayliner is average by any means either, yer choice on gettin back on the water for 1300 or 2700......it sure seems a viable option. search it here on iboats. not to many folks got much bad to say about em...............
