I originally placed this thread on different forum and now realized I was incorrect in it's placement.

I am in the midst of sanding down my outdrive and other parts to prepare for repainting. I have spent some time and read the rather lengthy, but very informative thread on BoaterEd forum. Just placed my order with Aircraft Spruce.com for Metal Prep 79 and Alodine 1201.

My questions are many:
1) What is the best material to use for the coroded metal to "smooth" it off? I have read JB Weld, and other things. Is automotive glazing compound a good idea? What type of JB Weld as there are many to choose from? Please direct me in appropriate material.

2) Is it correct to place the appropriate fillers before treating the bare aluminum with Metal Prep 79?...Or should the Prep be applied before?

3) I have already performed a no-no; I used a wire brush in drill taking down the corrosion. These are most of the areas now requiring some filler. The marina I purchased from this spring performed a quick "pretty it up" re-paint where more of this damage is present as well. Anything special I should do beyond the treating with cleaner and etcher once bare surface is exposed?

3) Unit is a Volvo SX-MHP Transom housing with Duoprop outdrive. I want to do a nice job as I intend to keep boat for a number of years. Is the TriLux gray paint the correct color or should I purchase the Volvo OEM paint? My intention is to paint all pieces. I have the drive off getting the skeg touched-up, have already had the props re-balanced and polished (wife could do her make-up in these!), and have the gimbal ring, pivot housing, and everything removed back to the transom shield. I want everything the right color so it matches the shift cover color, and intend to purchase the appropriate decals.

4) I have hand-sanded all that I can; there are areas that are virtually impossible inside the pivot housing and other areas to get at. How much should I worry about paint scuff and/or removal in these hard to reach areas? Short of dipping the pieces or sand-blasting I don't know how to do any better.

5) Is it appropriate to paint the surface on pivot housing that matches up to the upper housing of outdrive or should i leave it un-painted? Same question where the o-ring sets within the pivot housing?

Thank you in advance for any assistance and direction. I'm sure I will have more questions....
