Outdrive fluid level increased?

Hi all,

I have a 1999 Volvo Penta DP-SM outdrive. Its in excellent condition, I perform all the yearly maintenance on it. Typically when I check the outdrive a few days later after bottom filling it, the level on the stick reads about dead center of the flat range . This year after a 4 day stay on Lake George, which was the first time this season I had the boat out to run it (besides being on the muffs), I decided to check the level and noticed the level had increased to near the upper end of the range (this was about 24hrs after the boat was last run).

The only thing I could think of is water intrusion causing the fluid level to rise. The stick showed clean gear lube, I removed the fill level screw and some gear lube oozed out, nice and clean. I then removed the drain bolt on the bottom of the leg and let out about 2 ounces of fluid, all of which was clean without any milky trace or water.

So my question is could the level of fluid without having been really run prior have been off slightly when I first checked post filling? Anyone encounter this?

Thanks!

Level will rise as drive gets warm. About 6% expansion
