This is my first post, and my first boat so forgive any newbie questions.
I just bought a 2000 Chaparral 200 SSE off Craigslist, the boat has no engine or outdrive, but is otherwise in good shape. I knew just enough about boats to thoroughly inspect the transom and flooring for rot before buying. There was none. The transom and floor looks new, literally like the boat might have 10-20 hours in the water at most.
Its original drive was a 5.0 Volvo Penta with an SX drive, but now all that remains is the inner and outer transom plates, hydraulic trim rams, hydraulic power steering cylinder, power steering pump and trim pump. All these parts look brand new, not a spec of rust or corrosion, and hardly even dirty. The interior is in decent shape, it has some dry rot from the Arizona sun but not enough for the vinyl to start cracking yet.
It was a bank repo, had the repo barcode stickers and BOA logo stickers all over it, the gelcoat was sun faded, but with a little work and a pneumatic buffer it looks awesome now, I can see my reflection in the paint/gelcoat. The hull was in great shape, no nicks, scrapes or hull damage. The steering cables, gauges, electrical stuff is all in great shape. The previous owner bought it in a repo auction., He said when the bank repo'd it, it was missing the engine and drive, i guess the previous owner wanted to get the last laugh.
I picked it up for $1400.00, it seemed like a great deal to me but i guess im not all that familiar with boats, so hopefully i didnt get hosed. As long as it doesn't cost more that its worth to fix.
Now that I have it, im discovering how expensive its going to be to replace the drive and engine. Should I replace the missing Volvo engine, drive and assorted pieces that are missing or should I repower with a Mercruiser? I could recover some of the cost of the Mercruiser stuff by selling the Volvo stuff the boat still has installed.
