Just replaced the outdrive gearset on a 89 Bayliner with the Alpha 1 outdrive. On the 1st trip out, the gasket started leaking. Noticed it was spit out around the drive. Maybe i overtorgued it? Whats the torque specs on the outdrive 6 nuts and the lower unit nuts as well? Take a look at the attached pics and tell me what you think. The new gasket is already in, just waiting to confirm torque specs before i wrench on it. Thanks...

Re: outdrive gasket failure

Installed gasket number 2. Torqued it to 30lb and it was ok. Then i torqued an additional 10lbs to 40 lbs and it spit out the right side this time. Whats going on here? I'm ctorquing them from the center out in a cross pattern.

Are you putting sealer on the gasket? They aren't supposed to have sealer.
Are the mating surfaces clean and smooth? Is the O-ring still there? Jerry

Clean, dry surface, no sealer. O-ring gasket still in place.

Re: outdrive gasket failure

Here's a pic of the second gasket. I torqued this guy to only 30lbs and it spit at 40. Also i used a different torque wrench this time around to rule that out. have another gasket ready to install, but this is a Sierra gasket w/o the built in o-ring. Any suggestions? I don't like using sealer, it seems to cause things to move around in my opinion. But then again...... Any thoughts?

As long as you lined up the six bolt holes & made sure the gasket was put on properly with the water passage o ring installed, I don't see a problem.....
However with out seeing the mating surfaces & a pic with the gasket on there before the drive is installed, who can really say what, if any, problem exists?.....
Post some pics before you install the drive.....;)

Try a OEM gasket. You would not be the first person to have problems with aftermarket parts.

Have a great day,

I thought QuickSilver was OEM Brand? Either way, the Seirra gasket seems to be holding at 50 LBS. all i did different is scudff both surfaces with a 3M disc and wipe down with carb cleaner before assembly. The good outcome with this gasket deal is now i can remove the outdrive and have it back in now in about 1/2 hour. Haven't had the boat in the water yet. Maybe tomorrow.

I use the quicksilver myself now, but I've found an awful lot of variation in aftermarket and OEM gaskets. Maybe the ones you had weren't quite for your model of drive?
