Outdrive Gear Ratio Question please?

I have a broken 17 tooth gear on my 5.0 litre 230hp Stringer 800. We all know how expensive these are, and the condition of my outside upper gearcase is bad as well. What would be the performance result of sticking in a Stringer 800 from say the 3.8 litre V-6 engine? I assume that I'd need to get my prop re-pitched, but can anyone suggest how the boat would act if I just put the prop I have onto the 3.8 liter Stringer 800? I found one locally that I'm thinking about buying just to get back on the water.

Thanks, Jay in Seattle.

My guess is that you will have significanlty better hole shot and possible overspeed at WOT depending on your RPM now. I think the numbers come out at around 16% more gear advantage . . .

60HP Difference between the two. Would that not damage or shorten the life of that 3.8 Outdrive?

3.8's used 800 series lowers so it should handle the power ok - plus, the 4 BBL 3.8 makes 185HP and they sold the 1.77 ratio 3.8 drive on V8 for high altitude
