Outdrive keeps leaking down, any suggestions?

Hello, I have a 1976 Slickcraft with a Ford 302 merc and an alpha 1 outdrive.

The outdrive trim works great, but it leaks down. The leaks are internal, not external. When sitting in my driveway, it'll leak down usually within a couple of hours, but on the water under a load, ever few seconds I have to bump the trim button to keep it trimmed. When I tow the boat, I have to tie the outdrive up to keep it from leaking down and contacting the road.

I've changed the fluid, checked for leaks, opened the bleeder screw to allow for air to escape as I run the trim up and down, what else is there?

Now here's another thing, when I was yanking on the outdrive to get my prop off (should have greased it more often), it seemed to loosen something up and then it would leak down before my eyes. Within a minute, it was on the ground. So, if I pull up and down on the lower unit, it'll cause it to loose pressure very quickly.

Are there check valves or something that might be bad?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

You have o-rings in the cylinders and check valves in the pump to wear and go bad. And while your at it be sure to change / rebuild the manual by-pass valve as well.

The good news is it's not a bad job to repair any of them.

That's good to know. Is there a write up floating around here on how to do this?

Thank you,
Steve

You need the Mercruiser service manual #2. but it's not online.
The PN for it is 90-71707.
Never seen any rebuild instructions online.
