Outdrive leak, engine stubbing

First, as the rivers are rising (and usually do through may) it usually makes the lake inaccessable in early may so I decided to get the boat splashed in April before the water got to high to be sure there would be no further issues once good boating season got here - sure glad I did. Last year, no problems to speak of, ect

I replaced the outdrive oil and impeller, boots were changed early last year by PO. I also tuned up the engine, rotor, cap, spark plugs, fuel filter, engine oil...splashed last weekend.

On the lake about 3 hours I noticed some water in the bilge, not normal from last year, I got my head down in there and noticed water dripping from the hole were the trim lines go through the hull into the lower section of the transom. Now that it's home I have removed the entire outdrive and inspected. I lowered the block that the lines go through and there was water in there as well as some fine sand. I assume that gasket is the main culprit as the bellows look good. I am going to change the bellows as well. Normal? Gimble looks decent and feels fine but might as well change while I'm here...some outdrive oil I believe is in the gimble boot, tho the gease is the same color and my sniffer isn't working to well to distiguish.

The only other problem, about this same time, reason for looking in bilge, the engine began to sutter or stubble. It had been fine running great the entire trip. When it would stubble the guages would all fall to nothing and then back where they were. I assume an electrical issue, what would be some common things to look for here?

Re: Outdrive leak, engine stubbing

After you put the new gasket on the trim hose manifold on the drive, put some water in the bilge above that manifold (but not into the starter) and see where the water leaks out.

Since all your gauges quite when the engine stutters and stumbles, look for loose, or dirty battery cables, and check the main harness plug to make sure the connections are all clean and making good contact.
