Boat has been sitting since Easter since I've been off the island more than I've been here. The second last time I used it, I had to add about 8 ounces of outdrive gearlube to the reservoir. That's the only time I ever had to add any since replacing the impeller about a year ago.

Boat was in the yard with the Alpha I Gen II outdrive fully raised. When I lowered it to start the engine and give it a once over, a little gear lube ran out. I had already checked the reservoir and it was still full. The lube came out of the gear housing water drain holes on both sides that are between the antiventilation plates near the front bolts which hold the upper and lower halves of the housing together.

Am I correct in assuming it's time to pull the drive, split the cases, clean it out, replace the gaskets and pressure test it?

Or you could pressure test it before you split it to see exactly whats leaking.

Re: Outdrive leak

may just be a bad quad ring (between the cases) or water pump base seal or gasket.

If it was a GEN II I would say its the cheap plastic drive shaft seals they lightly push in to the upper. (Very Bad Design here)
