Hello, has anyone used the "locknuts" for drive security?I assume they are like locking wheel lugnuts for a car??Any good /bad info on them??Do they sell them here at I-boats? My boat is going to stay parked at the beach this year and I'm a little worried about theft.Thanks...

Re: outdrive locknuts?

I have never used them, but I know of them (we had them for sale in our shop a few years back)... As you surmise, they are a lug nut style lock nut.... If you decided not to get one, let me know where you're boat will be.... I can have the leg off in under 6 minutes. :D:D:D (and in total silence. :D)

Re: outdrive locknuts?

I know it took me 40 minutes to one off my used boat because the previous owner did not have the key. Hack saw blade and screw driver got it off without messing up the bolt. It would have been a lot faster if I had a cutoff tool. I would definitely get one put on if I had my boat was in public storage but my boats stays in the garage or at work in a fenced area with security cameras. I am still thinking about getting one next fall when I winterize the boat.

It keeps the somewhat honest people from stealing it but if someone really wants it with the right tools they can take it. Although they probably would skip yours if you had a lock and move on to another leg that does not have a lock. The lock is just a deterrent that could save you mucho dineros $$$.

A cut off wheel and a pair of visegrips take care of lost key.
Done it in about 10 min with some noise:D
In fact I've done it twice, for the second time key wasn't lost but stripped.

Yeah, I figured that there was some sort of key that CAN NOT GET LOST as I've helped a couple friends with their vehicles.Thank you they are now on the list!! I dont hear too much about that kind of theft around here, but with the ease of removing such an expensive part I'm sure it's happening.

Hopefully this doesn't change your travel plans too much, enjoy your kayak trip and good luck...

I know on the car lugs, if you loose your key you can take an impact socket and get it off

Re: outdrive locknuts?

What beach? I'm right next to Nashua, i'll be there in 45 minutes, and i'll have that drive off in 60 seconds making a complete racket using my cordless impact :)

All kidding aside, i've seen the locknuts and not a fan of them. They get chewed up, people lose keys, i've even seen people put non stainless steel ones on that are a nightmare to remove after sitting in salt for 3 months.

If your boats on a trailer, 1 thing you can try is trimming the drive all the way in, then wrap the whole drive with a heavy chain and padlock it to the trailer. After that bump the trim up so the chain appears taut. When you want to go boating, remove the chain.

Sure the chain can be cut, but the novice theif will probably look past your boat to 1 that doesn't look like its a hassle.
What beach are you worried about theft?

ps~ Who does your service work?

Re: outdrive locknuts?

I've had one on my boat for three years. Drive comes off every year for service, haven't had any problems with the locking nut yet.

Re: outdrive locknuts?

remove the drive, then make or buy the drive block off plate to protect the gimbal and store the drive inside.
those drive locks can slow me down,by about 2 minutes.

Re: outdrive locknuts?

Ahhh, i can see why you'd want one if your boats in Hampton. Lots of fun stuff/boat theft happens up there. By all means try the lock nuts, just hold on to the key.

Re: outdrive locknuts?

As you can see, it slightly slows down someone that wants your outdrive off. On same note, it does give someone trying to steal your drive a bit of a hassle and they often will move to the next one without it. Put a giant sticker on the back to point out the lock along with paint the lock hunters orange. Then the thief will just skip your boat and go to the next unless they really want yours. ;)
