5.7lx merc motor with alpha one outdrive,

Just purchased it and since it has been getting nicer I have started to mess a bit. Today I was checking on some of the electronics and such and I trimmed the motor down a bit and now it won't go back up.

If I switch it from down to up quick It will act like it starts to go up and then just stops, no noise, no nothing....

Comman issue? where should I start, in the switch, or down at the pump......

Thanks

Check for corroded wires at the solonoid and switch. If it worked in the fall, it is probably just a bad connection. No worries!

Have you tried using the trailer button? What year is this Alpha?
Sounds to me like you might be right at the max of the trim limit which is why you can let it down just a little and it will go up just a little. You are up in the trailer mode.

Pull out the switch and clean all the connections. Find the power wire, then try crossing the two load wires (one for up and the other for down) to the pos wire one at a time. It should go down no prob when you touch the down wire. If it goes up when you touch it with the other wire, then your switch is bad.

Same thing's happening to my '86 stbd outdrive. Mine clicks when I try to come back up but it won't go. I think it's the solenoid because you can cross it at the trim motor and it will raise it.

You guys can either guess at it and throw parts at it and hope you happen on the problem, or you can go up to the Adults only sticky at the top of this forum, go to the service manual links and download the OEM service manuals.
They have DETAILED troubleshooting steps and wiring diagrams for the different systems and will take all the guess work out of it.
But if trial and error and spending money for no reason isn't a problem for you, then go for the "Throw money at it till you find the problem" method.

Re: Outdrive not coming back up?

OK, I guess I am truly a newbie... the outboards that I ran in the past did not have trailer buttons, and this one is not labeled well at all, but it worked....

Thanks
