Outdrive off!! Gimbal on shaft!

Thanks for the tips and tricks! I got the Alpha 1 Gen II off today. Gimbal bearing was definitely shot. The issue I have now is the bearing stayed on the shaft and is stuck as stuck can be! Any tips on getting this beast off? I cannot seem to locate a bearing puller with jaws long enough.

I would suggest heat and a large hammer.

Don't know, but it makes me wonder if you shouldn't just remove the entire shaft assembly, u-joints and all. If it's seized on the shaft, chances are you're gonna have to replace the coupler shaft. Plus, it will be easier to remove when it's out of the drive. Just my post-Browns 9th loss, third cocktail, humble opinion...:D

Well if you know someone that is Real Good with an acetelyne torch
it can be sliced and removed without beating on everything.

2 slices the outer comes off , clean away all grease and bearing remnants,
then 2 very carefully cut slices 180 deg apart ,DO not cut all the way to the shaft it can then be finished with a good chisel and hammer.

may sound crude but it works .lol

Im thinking maybe a ball joint buster tool. If I can find one with a wide enough fork.

Heat is a last resort IMO. It WILL warp the shaft.... wether it's alot or a little. May not be noticable but still....

If I were you I'd take a grinder and a cutoff wheel to it, but don't cut all the way through the bearing... just cut until you get to the part of the bearing that is actually contacting the shaft, then cut 1/2 way through that and take a screw driver and hammer to it to break the bearing.... being careful not to mar the shaft. In order for this to work you need to be paying attention while cutting... get yourself nice and steady and watch very closely when cutting it.

We used to do this all the time and it works great if you do it right.

An air arc is another option but you need to find someone that has some serious skills with one. I got to the point to where I could blow bearings off without touching the shaft and you could even put your hand on the shaft right after you cut it without getting burned.

I'd go the grinder route though if I were you.;)

Yeah I have been eye balling my side grinder sitting on my shelf... Time to have some fun I suppose.

Question about gimbal bearings, my father in law has a sea ray with twin mercs, im not sure if he has alpha ones but he has a new gimbal bearing he didnt need. From what I can find the bearing is the same for alpha 1's and bravos. Is this correct?

Spray it with PB blaster and let it sit for about 15 minutes. That should get if off. If not repeat.

I had this happen to me before and I used this slide hammer with the "hook" with some PB Blaster and she came right off...

I was going to buy that tool, but I found out AUTOZONE rents them free.

You use a credit card to put down a deposit and they do not process it unless you do not return the tool.. It was $85 deposit the cost of the tool if bought there.

Open the box and check the contents in front of the clerk in case any parts are missing. They did not check when I returned it and just put it back on their tool loan shelf.

Possibly have someone hold the outdrive while it's resting in a vise with the gimbal bearing against the jaws (loose) and tap the end of the shaft with dead blow hammer to knock the shaft through the bearing race just a suggestion. Good luck

I would tap the bearing outer race using a wide screwdriver if a puller won't reach. Tapping the end of the shaft could mess up the spindle cuts.

A air chisel with a dull blade will vibrate it off.

If you have it resting in the vise and the bearing up against the jaw of the vise tap the end of the shaft with a piece of brass between the hammer and the shaft the brass will protect the splines on the shaft. your last resort should be using anything pneumatic or applying heat. Remember small hard taps to shock it loose soak it good with penatrating oil 1st.

I got that sucker off!! After all that my father in law tells me he has a yolk in good condition I can have!
I ended up grinding the outer ring off. Once I got the the inner race I grinded a grove in it almost to the shaft and used a hammer to crack it the rest of the way. Worked like a charm! Im going to save this sucker and make a necklace out of it!

Better yet, glue it to the center of your steering wheel as a conversation starter.
