Finally got to work on the project boat again, in the process of replacing a cracked block with a rebuilt engine. Took off the outdrive yesterday and the inside of the bellows where covered in grease, is this normal? The ujoints look to be in pretty good condition, and the bellows have no tears. Drive is an alpha one gen+. Also, should the prop be able to spin if the throttle is in full forward position, I would imagine it shouldn't since it is "in gear", Is this right? Mine is able to spin wondering if this is correct

Re: Outdrive off, too much grease?

the ujoint area looks like it was just serviced. If there is too much grease coming out of the gimble bearing then just wipe it off. Make sure to use a new gasket set and o-rings. The green grease on the shifter is Quicksilver Special Lube 101 (teflon I think). As for the prop spinning in one direction while in gear, this is normal. Put it in the other gear and you will find that the spinning - clicking behavior is now opposite (spins and clicks in one direction, does not spin in the other). Thats how the dog clutches work if I recall correctly- but somebody more experienced than me should comment.

Jon is right, the prop should spin in the clockwise direction in forward, and lock if you turn it counterclockwise, opposite in reverse.

Yea mine looked like that after I pulled my ourdrive off. Its just purged old grease from pumping in the new thru the jerk fitting.
