Outdrive Oil Fill Problem

So my brother-in law has a 1992 Four Winns with a OMC outdrive on it. Last summer he went to check the oil level in the outdrive and as he took the top fill plug out he heard something fall down inside the outdrive, like a piece of metal of some sort. He didnt drive it after that but we want to get it running again. I have had my lower unit off of my 85 merc and it looks to nearly the same. And I have a book to help me out.
My questions is what was it that fell??? the hole that is there in the outdrive is plasic, looks to be an insert into the metal casing of the outdrive, was there a metal washer type thing that the plug threaded into that just came loose from the inside of the outdrive? or a nut or what?? And is this a factory set up or has someone along the lines cobled it together??? What should be done to fix the problem????
Also I plan on removing the lower unit to remove the "piece" that fell down will I be able to get to it from there or is ther a better way???
Its not located near me at the time so I cannot get a photo to help explain. Any help would be great.
Thanks

That's not a fill plug to begin with. It's a screw that holds some kind of SS wear plate on the inside of the drive. There is supposed to be a decal over it so you can't see it. YOu need to pull the outdrive, get the plate back up where it belongs and locktite the screw in and never touch it again.

The fill and drain screws are on the other side of the drive, and a dipstick on the top.

Can I get to this plate that fell off by removing the lower unit or will I need to remove the entire outdrive from the boat? If I remove the outdrive from the boat how will I get the piece out and reattached? will I be able to stuck my hand in there from the front side wheer the drive shaft sticks throught?

Looks like, removed the OMC Mistake Number Two Screw.
U need to pull the drive out,,,,then
hopefully it is still in the left water channel,,,

It is a SS plate(nut).
putting it back on is the harder part. I use a long driver with a nut taped on.
Do me a favor, try not to drop it again in this process.

Alignment isnt necessary, but highly recommended.
While U are at it,,,
U will want to check the gimbal bearing & grease it + U joint + o ring
+ shaft o rings + drive bellows.

It's not a nut that screw goes into, it's a plate. I haven't had to put one in for a long time, I usually pull the drive off, turn it upside down, and shake if it hangs up, then you can get in there with a screw driver or stick and push it into place to put the screw in.
