" I dont understand how Outdrive oil ends up IN the bilge"

dshelly stated the resevoir was empty....so, from that I surmise he has a remote outdrive resevoir like this: http://tinyurl.com/lp5v mounted in his engine compartment.
So- possible causes of the oil in this tank ending up in bilge?
Tank cracked
Hose off bottom of tank
Hose to outdrive cut/split/holed
Fitting on tank broken off
Connectors on hoses broken
Ramming around in REALLY rough water without the cap on splashed it all out (doubt that one)

Not really any way for outdrive oil to get back into the boat once it's left the boat and in the outdrive

Pour in some more oil and see where it leaks out.

I had a resovoir unit that had stress cracks at the bottom where the brass fitting was secured. It dripped until I repaired it.Make sure the cap is on tight and also check the check valve in the cap. Charlie

Re: outdrive oil in bilge

I just had outdrive oil leaking into the boat, in fixing the outdrive to properly shim the upperdrive shaft and driven gear assembly the oil seal needs to be removed, in replacing the seal it went in hard, hit it with a screwdriver to seat it and pinched the seal assembly. there is also a O ring in the yoke assembly which was pinched. This let outdrive oil past the u joint into the bilge. mercrusier alpha outdrive with remote resevior. The remote saved the gears as the upper gears dont last long with out oil. the faster your go the more oil leaks. I ignored one pargraph in the manuel,
"for confidence in obtaining maximum service, replace all seal, o-rings, and gaskets." this means new one not just replace. cost a couple of fishing days.
