Outdrive oil leaking into bilge

Hey guys, I have a bunch of outdrive oil that has leaked through the bellows and into the bilge area of the boat (Merc 470 with 470 drive). I have a pre-alpha "outdrive gasket set", it has 3 0-rings, a large round ring and a gasket; will this do the trick or am I looking at something more serious? There is oil drips on the bottom of the bellows too so I figured I'd replace those, the intake hose for the impeller and maybe the lower shift cable. Thanks guys!

Outdrive oil comes past the seals behind the u-joints on the yoke shaft going into the outdrive. Not a real easy seal to change without the right tools.
I would guess you are due for all new seals on the outdrive, how are your upper gears and bearing looking like.
You will find out when you change the seal that is leaking outdrive oil into the bellows area.

Re: Outdrive oil leaking into bilge

I just did an impeller replacement so it was full. Prior to that, there wasn't much oil in it at all. Now, I'm sure it is near empty again - with the engine running the prop used to turn slowly (I'd guess from the oil circulating) and now it doesn't. I'll drain whatever is left and pull it off hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions guys; I'll let you know how it looks once it is removed!

Do you think it will be bad even though the boat hasn't run long - like 4 or 5 times for 15-20 minutes (In neutral) on muffs only? It hasn't been in the water since the impeller replacement and leaky seal... I'm going to take the drive off in a little bit to see what's happening in a few moments.

I just got it apart - the bellows, upper gears and bearings look fine. So there should be NO oil in the bellows correct? Are there any seals inside the bellows area that I should replace with the drive removed? I'm going to begin removing and disassembling the drive gear/bearing assembly; as well as cleaning up all this nasty oil.

The oil leaking into the bellows probably started with water getting into the bellows and rusting the seal surface and damaging the front seal in the drive.

Re: Outdrive oil leaking into bilge

Alrighty so it seems I'm looking at an upper and lower seal kit, replacement bellows; should I change out the gimbal bearing while I'm at it or should I leave it alone since it doesn't feel like it is worn out (about 84 hours on this boat). I might do the lower cable; is there anything else anyone can suggest? Other than the spanner to remove the bearing retainer in the upper housing are there any other special tools I'll need (already have the spanner thankfully) for sealing up the drive? I have a slide hammer, not sure that will suffice to change the gimbal bearing so I may have to get some tools... Thanks guys.

i think your just looking at the ft. seal of the drive. the one in bd's link. #21.
for sure R&R the bellows.

for sure R&R the gimble brg. if it got wet. it'll rust in the end and fail. feels good now or not.

i had about the same job as your doing when i got my boat. here's my list of things i replaced
bellows
shift cable and shift cable bellows
shift shaft
shift lever
shift shaft seal (new style)
water hose
gimble brg
ujoints
ft seal of the upper
yoke
brg. assy.

for tools, just read the s/m. it'll list any tools necessary. if your lucky and only have to do the ft. seal. ya may get away with only the spanner wrench. if you replace anything other than the ft. seal. ie, gears, brgs. you'll need to reshim.

this is why ya do the yoke (item #11).

note the rust right at where the seal rides at. this rust is what destroys the seal and causes the lub to leak out. the rust was caused by the water intrusion into the bellows area.

this is the assy. your going after. the seal (on the right) is the second to last thing to remove from the stack. nut on left was first item to remove.

i ended up getting a new torque wrench for the project. i wanted to be in the middle of the torque wrench capabilities to set to spec.

also, if ya don't have the small spacer in the brg. pack. you will use rolling torque to tighten down the nut.

if your gonna tear into this. ya gotta have a service manual if you hope to succeed with the repair.

do a pressure/vac test when done to be sure yer sealed up.

edit. get a ujoint press too for the ujoints. + there's a special mercruiser adaptor to use for the ujoints. these two tools make short work of the ujoints.

What year is your drive? Is it an actual 470 model, or is it one of the newer ones known as a 165, 170, or ???

Re: Outdrive oil leaking into bilge

Thank you kindly Don, I have manuals 4, 6 and 8 but not 3! Ziggy, I appreciate the picts and I will likely change the u-joints and gambal bearing as suggested - while I'm in there and have it apart I may as well especially since everything is 32 years old; 84 hours or not I believe age plays a part.

Re: Outdrive oil leaking into bilge

So for an update - U-joint bellows had a slice in it I'm guessing from the water hose rubbing on it repeatedly when steering the drive left/right. I don't imagine a lot of water got in it but at least some did. The yoke had rust and a groove in it where the seal goes. I'm replacing u-joints, seals, bellows, yoke, water hose and the gimbal bearing. Does the oil seal behind the gimbal ring usually wear out? Looks like it is still okay but I may just replace it since I'm in there. It will be a while since I need a new alignment tool...

Re: Outdrive oil leaking into bilge

I'm reinstalling the ujoint bellow currently... Is there anything I can do to prevent the water hose from rubbing a hole in it like the last time? Thanks guys!
