I have a 2002 5.0 hooked to a Alpha 1 outdrive.(new to me) Boat now has 40 hours on it. After last trip out, I was in engine compartment cleaning and checking. I have a outdrive oil moniter, just a plastic container mounted for easy access. It is down to the add line, don't know if it was there at start of season or not. (I have put 11 hours on it) The manual calls for Quicksilver HD Gear lube. Is this a quality oil, or should I use something better? I ask, as my jet skis stated not to use Quicksilver 2 stroke oil.

Re: Outdrive oil

Not sure about the bad rap for QS 2-stroke except I suppose they want to sell their own stuff. The blue/green Merc HiPerf gearlube is among the best on the market. Add to the fill line and keep an eye on it. Level fluctuations are normal.

Re: Outdrive oil

Before you add anything,I would take the boat out for a drive and check the level after running the boat. The fluid will aerate and take more space.Make sure it is not at the current level on purpose. There is a chance it may overflow the resovoir while the fluid is aerated.I would see how high it goes and add accordingly.Charlie

Re: Outdrive oil

Thanks for the replies guys! I really wanted to go with what mfg suggested, but was leary due to the jet ski warning. I will run and recheck before adding.
