i am looking for the water plug on the port side of the outdrive. it is located in the upper unit under the cobra medallion. i have looked all over and can not locate my original one. i can't seem to find one on any of the diagrams, just the medallion itself. any help would be great.

thanks

Re: outdrive plug on cobra

If it is the one I am thinking of then it was not really a plug, it is a flat head maybe countersunk bolt that goes into a backing plate. The bolt should not ever be unscrewed or the backing plate falls down into the drive and no way to put the bolt back in.

thanks for the reply. it is the one your thinking of. the previous owner must have removed it because i didn't. sad part is i resealed everything and filled with gear oil, installed the drive on the boat and started it before i realized water was pumping out the side and not to the engine. i double checked after reading the link that you provided to another thread(thanks), and the omc manual doesn't even mention this plug in the upper housing section. i guess it's ingenuity time, there is no mention in the manual, no pictures of it on any parts diagram, and i'm not buying a used outdrive just to get this part. hopefully i can find a solution.

thanks

Ayuh,.... It's merely a ssteel screw, 'n ssteel nut,... Donno the size though,...

The Big Problem with the ole OMC Stupid Screw, is puttin' the nut on the inside, requires splittin' the upper from the lower,...
'ell, the nut may well still be bouncin' 'round on top of the lower,...

I imagine you could epoxy it closed,...

Re: outdrive plug on cobra

thanks to those that replied to the post. idlespeed is correct, no need to separate the drives. got with a local guy that's been around a while and he had the parts. was able to access the water cavity and install the nut. pulled the drive off the gimble and had it back on within 30 minutes. i kinda freaked out thinking i had to separate the drives after passing vacuum/pressure tests and filling with oil. drive is now 100% complete and should be ready for the first water test in a couple of days.

thanks again

Ok, glad to know I'm not alone . I'm also a newbie to boating, obviously. Anyways do I need to apply some kind of adhesive when replacing the black plastic plug in? What should I use? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Black plastic plug???
Where and what??
You should start your own thread.
If it's the plug they are talking about.
It should have a rubber seal/washer under the screw?

OMC, Johnson & Evinrude - UPPER GEAR HOUSING - 1993 OMC Stern Drive 4.3

for some reason these parts are not listed in the diagrams for earlier years but the housing is the same so these parts will work to solve your problem. And yes you don't have to split the upper and lower drive, once you pull the drive you will see that this is an easy job. The odd thing is that this diagram makes it more confusing than it really is. These parts fit the hole on the side of the drive (port) that you can't see in the diagram, not the starboard as it appears here.
