I have a 1988 SeaRay Sundancer 5.7 L with Alpha 1 outdrive.

I spun the upper gears 10 miles off shore. replaced the outdrive with a new one. Only got to run it for about 14 hrs and tore the lower gears out of it.

I have no clue what could be causing this this to happen any help would be welcomed. Bob

Re: Outdrive Question

Did you replace the entire drive or just the upper parts--gears only or the entire casing ??????????

oh, sterndrive engineering.

i have heard some horror stories about warranty with them, i have never dealt with them but there is a reason their drives are cheaper than others

I think i may have found out the hard way. i was hopeing it was just a bad outdrive rather than some other problem causing the outdrive to mess up.

Would still like any imput on this subject

Re: Outdrive Question

Well i got back on the water today. I had my old outdrive laying around for parts so i took the lower unit off drained and cleaned it out.
I installed it on the new upper and hoped it would work. and it did.

Took it to the lake and ran it for 2 hrs and it ran just fine. was a little afraid to WOT it so i kept it around 3600 rpms doing 34 mph. i figure that will be ok for now beings i leave for the ocean on Sunday morn for a week to fish.

Just wanted to update and thank all for the imput its a great place for finding a cure for your boats illness. thank you all. Bob

Re: Outdrive Question

They will stand by their warrenty, When you filled it with gear lube from the bottom ,did you let it stand 24 hrs and then recheck it?

Yes i did then topped it off. i have no warrenty anymore.

When i lost the upper i parked the boat, bought the new outdrive and installed.

Then boat sat for a year, so i have no recourse. Its out of warrenty
