I have a 2005 stingray with 4.3 and Volvo Penta sx drive. How much grease should I pump into gimbal through zerk? Is it bad to over grease it?
If you remove the outdrive annually, you will be able to see the grease your are pumping into the gimbal area. Otherwise, you are pumping somewhat blind. You can't really grease it too much, however at some point you are wasting grease and making a mess of things. If you don't pull the drive and your grease gun is primed so to speak, 15 pumps should do it until you pull the drive and can inspect how much is in there.
i have never had my outdrive off. Boat has 150 hours on it. Is it supposed to come off yearly?
Absolutely. Should be coming off at the end of every season. You should have been inspecting and lubricating the ujoints, inspecting the bellows, changing gear unit oil, inspecting the gimbal, drive alignment, lubricating mounting studs, splines on drive and other tasks.
any suggestions on a stand? I’m mechanically inclined but nervous to remove drive.
There are several stands created by users online, mostly out of 2x4's. I used a heavy duty rubber garbage can and just lifted the outdrive onto it so it sits sideways. The drive is about 90 lbs or so. Take the prop off first and put a rubber pad beneath the skeg so when you slide it back off the studs you don't damage anything. It is not bad and I've done it solo several times. One helper makes it much easier.
do all the unjoints have grease fittings?
Yes.
