Outdrive shaft seized in flywheel drive

I am trying to pull the engine in my boat and swap it out with a rebuilt one. Everything is loose but the drive shaft is seized on the splines. I have tried to shake loose from the engine side and that didn't work so I unbolted the vertical drive and couldn't get that loose either. So the shaft is froze to the female receiver. Has anyone run into this problem before?

I think people will be able provide you with better advice if you post the year, make and model of the engine and drive which you are working with.

Have a great day,

Rob.

No matter what it is, you remove the drive first, then the engine.

Howdy,

The more experienced ones will chime in but you have possibly a couple of things going on here.

The splined shaft could be so badly corroded that it's stuck in the coupler.

If you're trying to pull the drive, the engine may be so far out of alignment that it's causing the shaft to be caught in a bind with the coupler. Are the engine mount pads so rotten that they've allowed the engine to "fall" in the front?

If you're trying to pull the engine before the drive.....well, you may be causing your own bind with the hoist. The drive comes off first......THEN you pull the engine.

After the engine goes back in the alignment MUST be checked and adjusted before the drive can be reinstalled.

You need an OEM manual or any manual....

Rick

I know for a fact that the shaft is seized in the coupler. I need to know how to break them free (safely) without breaking the houses due to prying.

Re: Outdrive shaft seized in flywheel drive

Ok, according to my 87 service manual, it's a 984542 drive, 984757 transom mount, and depending on thru hull exhaust/power steering etc, the engine should be 504AMFTC(ARY) or 504APFTC(ARY)

Of course someone over the years could have made changes to all of it. and it may have other stuff in there.

Bottom line, it's Cobra. Did you buy it or are you going to buy it...( I guess if you're changing the engine you have already bought it )

Someone else that has had this problem will have to take it from here. That drive obviously has not been off in many years. I am thinking that I would put the rear engine mount bolts back in and set the engine back onto the mounts.

remove the drive nuts (6) and the rear trim cyl thru bolt and support it with a hoist and use a chain hoist or strap to pull the drive off.

If it's REALLY corroded you may break something pulling the drive off. The upper gear housing was not really designed to handle a severe pull force on the yoke/U-joints etc.

But there's a few people here that have had this exact problem and can tell you how they did it.

Regards,

Rick

by the way,

I did a little search of this forum (using the key words "coupler" stuck" "rust" )

That guy had to cut the yoke. I don't envy you.

I had to cut the shaft (Just aft of the coupler) on one that was froze up like that.
Just make absolutly sure you have no gas fumes or open gas lines on the engine before sticking the torch in there. Even put some water in the bilge so you don't damage the fiberglass.

I wonder if he could get in there with a "sawzall" and just let'er rip. It would sure keep the flames out of there...

I'm not exactly sure of Cobras, but if its like the Mercs, you sure its stuck to the coupler and not the gimbal bearing?

Ayuh,......

Probably the Coupler,......
If it was the Gimbel Bearing,....
The Outdrive wouldn't come off, but the motor Would.....

If Zaner could get a inch or so from it,...
Maybe he could slip an end-wrench thru the crack,+ remove the Coupler Bolts......

It's absolutely Amazing what a finger full of Grease could have done for this boat.......
