it goes down no problem but when i try to bring it up it will move a bit and then it stops, so i let go of my switch and hit it again and it starts going up again for an inch or two, and so on
when i have somebody with me to help ill hit the switch and the friend will help the outdrive to go up, that is how i get it up
any ideas, the solenoid or motor keep in mind it does up a bit everytime i hit the switch
thank you fellow gents

Two posts on the same subject? A year and model would certainly help.

Re: trim issues

What he was asking was what year? The tilt/trim systems are VERY different before 1987 and after.

165HP was a Chevy 250 inline six in the early seventies, but that might not matter to the trim/tilt.

Welcome aboard.

no sir this post is for the omc outdrive sterndrive that uses the gears on the outdirve it self to go up and down
the other post is for the engine trim on the front of the engine

Velija - before you go rib bustin' after the tilt motor let's hit a couple of basics:

1. are the trunions greased and moving okay?
2. Is the clutch pack full of water?
3. Is the battery fully charged?

Tilt and trim are two separate pieces on an OMC Stringer, so make sure you're never using the tilt while under power (except in real low rpm for shallow water). The motor is a pain to get to, but (IMHO) more often than not the culprit.

Hello Fellow OMC owners. I am new to this forum so I didn't know ho to start a new discussion so I will build off this one. I have a 1987 OMC 4.3 liter with a Cobra outdrive and have a problem with the trim coming up. It goes down perfectly fine but up is a different story. At the start of last season, before it went into the water I had the same problem but when I put it in the water it worked. I used it all year without a problem. Took it out this weekend to winterize it and again the up will not work. If I continue to push the up buttom on the shift handle I hear a clicking. If I push it enough times it will work but that is probably 1 in 30 pushes. I cleaned all connections, opened up shift handle and the wires look good. Does anyone know what can be the problem? If the selenoid is bad will it still click? Any help would be great.
BarbeeLakeMan - Welcome aboard.

Cobra system is completely different than what I have. I don't know much about it. Go into the OMC forum and at the top left there should be a red button for NEW POST. You'll get a lot more help that way.

There are a bunch of nylon thrust washers in the shaft and worm gear system, if they are worn or missing it make a huge difference in raising the drive. If the bushing on the pinion gear (clutch pack) is worn this will add to the problem. Basically a very bad design that you have to learn to deal with. As well as parts that are NLA!

True story! It is a 'wet' clutch pack that the motor turns, which IF/WHEN its working properly will raise the leg.. if water gets in there (actually, WHEN it does..) it will not have as much 'grip' and the leg wont raise well or at all.. if its got NO oil (replaced by water..) It actually will raise itself out of the water when you throw it in reverse. That also a true story..

I hit a sand bar, well.. drove through it for 30 feet or so.. then came to a stop.. (I shut the engine down as soon as i felt the boat starting to drag) The force was enough that it pushed the leg up (overcame the clutch pack pressure, also sucking in water at the same time) BUT the weight of the drive allowed it to drop back down after being towed off the beach.. Didn't hold it down back at the dock though!

Take the 4 bolts out and pop the cover, carefully, and pull the whole works out to check the condition of the disks. If they clean up and aren't scored or damaged to bad, just put it back together as it came apart and reseal the cover plate well, and fill with fresh oil. I cant remember for sure, but I think i used 80/90 gear oil in mine and it worked fine after.

As cr2k said, check the nylon washers in the worm gear area. I've had outdrives do the same thing as yours because of a nylon washer in front of the worm gear.

Re: outdrive will drop but has problems coming up

disassembling and cleaning all the electrical terminals on the high current side of the relays usually helps. As well as suggestions above.

I like to sand both sides of the 10 ga terminals with fine sandpaper and then sand the terminal side of the nut and washer too.
Then look for a barrel shaped fuse holder and take it apart and clean the 50A fuse with steel wool or replace the fuse if rusty (car audio shop has them)

Don't worry about the control side of the relays (dash switch to relays) as that's obviously working fine.

Read post # 11 again and be sure to check a parts break down for those washers. It's a little nylon washer but can make a big difference.
